Corporate Accommodation Vs Hotels

Your company has transferred you to another city or you have taken a new job that requires you to relocate. Single or married, this requires a short-term stay somewhere other than home. Maybe just long enough to find an apartment, it’s good to get to know the area a bit before you sign a year-long lease, but it may take several months if you’re waiting for your family to join you.

Hotels or some type of corporate housing will probably be what you consider. There are advantages to both (did someone say room service?), but most likely not in the pocket area. Much depends on who is going to pay for it. If you are a family man and your family is staying home for the kids to finish the school year and you just got a new job, price can be a big consideration. When it comes out of your own pocket, you think twice before spending it. If it’s a company transfer, and the company is footing the bill, it’s simply a matter of personal preference.

We all know that hotels give you a big room. Cooking is usually not an option in a hotel room, although some have microwave ovens. I don’t know what you think about frozen dinner 7 nights a week, but I don’t think much of it. I guess you could order something to go.

Hotels are usually located in a highly congested area, such as around shopping malls or near the airport. If the hotel has a restaurant you can eat there and make up for all the frozen dinners and one of the advantages of being in a very busy area is that there will be plenty of restaurants. I guess eating at a restaurant will be better than a frozen dinner alone in your hotel room, huh?

Doing laundry is also a consideration, I’m sure hotels will have a laundry service. I’m sure they charge you for that, but at least you have clean underwear. If they don’t offer laundry service I’m sure there is a laundromat somewhere and most of them leave lint and creases.

Most corporate housing is in moderately congested areas, still close to restaurants and shops, but not right in the middle of it all. Although they also offer a large room, they also offer other options. They offer units with separate bedrooms, this way you don’t always have to eat in bed. They have kitchens, fully electrical appliances. In this way, cooking is a real option. You may be a person who loves to cook, so this option will appeal to you. These corporate housing units have all the furniture you’ll need, as well as sheets, towels, dishes, cutlery, and just about anything else you could possibly need. They even have corkscrews and toilet brushes. Most buildings have laundry rooms with pay-as-you-go machines so you can wash your clothes. They try to provide everything you need, a home away from home.

A job change can be stressful, so why not take the stress out of where you’ll live for your first 30-60 days in a new city?
