Guanaja Honduras, Wiener Schnitzel in paradise!

Why does someone go to Guanaja? Where the hell is Guanaja?

Located in Central America off the north coast of Honduras, this barely developed Bay Island has a lot to offer. With its crystal clear Caribbean waters, it is said to have world class bone fishing. If you are a deep sea fisherman, some of the best migratory fish pass through these waters, so deep they will blow your mind. Lush green mountains dating back to the time Christopher Columbus first set foot on the island in 1502 and named it the Isles of Pines, this, along with an unlimited supply of pure fresh water cascading down from mountain waterfalls, make it an island paradise. contemplate!

Guanaja is a stunning island. Until now, it has been under the radar of most travelers and people seeking an affordable retirement. It seems that now it is starting to change a bit. Who would have thought it’s home to some of the best sausage schnitzel south of the German border?

An important German population has come to this Central American hideout. There is even a restaurant and bar serving the best of German food. Called Manatí, it is owned by a German guy named Hansito and is run by two other Germans, a married couple named Annetta and Klaus. Manatí is the local hangout every Saturday afternoon with Honduran beer and imported German beers sold side by side. Various spirits from Europe, used as a digestive aid, are also available after heavier meals. Gringos from all over Guanaja come to see what Annetta and Klaus have prepared in their little kitchen and no one leaves disappointed.

Annetta has a connection with a butcher who sends her special meats and sausages, or sausages, that she needs from the mainland … from the mainland of Honduras, that is! Who would think you could get authentic German food in the wilderness of the Bay Islands?

On the Saturday afternoon we visited, wiener schnitzel was on the menu. As we walked up the steps of the restaurant, we heard the thumps and thumps coming from the kitchen as Klaus tenderized the pork to the point that it could be cut with a fork. The schnitzel, dredged in a mixture of flour and egg, is fried in butter and is really delicious. Served with authentic German potato salad and locally made sauerkraut, my Austrian husband was almost in tears with joy! I say “almost”, because who in their right mind would choose to be in Germany, freezing their hind legs, when they could live economically in the paradise of Guanaja?

Everyone has their own idea of paradise. Some people love snow and mountains, while others believe that gentle breezes off a tropical island are the way to go. Some people say tomato, others TOMATO. Jimmy Buffet hums about a cheeseburger in paradise, but for my money, I’ll have a sausage schnitzel in paradise any day!
