Thermal drying is the most common way to achieve high dewatering levels for sludge. It involves heating the sludge and evaporating the water. This can be done in a sludge dryer, a sludge incinerator, or in a steam boiler. Each has its own unique challenges and benefits, but all offer the ability to reach very high dry matter contents in a relatively short period of time with little energy input. This technique is suitable for high concentration sludge and provides the best economic return on investment of all options.
