Tips for caring for mink blankets

Contrary to what many people think, mink blankets are not that difficult to clean and care for. Although they may look and feel delicate, you really don’t have to work hard to handle and wash them. You don’t have to resort to expensive dry cleaners because you can actually do the cleaning yourself. Although mink fabric may look like a natural fiber, it is actually made from acrylic and is man-made. If you want to extend the life and preserve the beauty of your precious mink sheet, read on.

Unlike blankets made from natural fibers, mink blankets are suitable for washing machines. If you think you have to wash your expensive blanket with your hands, you are really wrong. In fact, you can put your mink in a washing machine. In fact, it would even be a good idea to find a heavy duty commercial washing machine to wash mink because this type of fabric tends to be heavy when wet. Just be sure to set the machine on delicate or gentle cycle. Cold water is best so your blanket colors won’t fade. Also, be sure to use a mild detergent. Don’t use something with bleach because harsh chemicals can affect the color and design of your blanket.

Ideally, mink blankets should be hung on a string and allowed to dry naturally. Draining this expensive blanket is not really a good idea. It is important to note that other drying settings are not appropriate for mink fabric. Unless you want your expensive mink to depreciate quickly, you need to be careful when you do so. Remember that acrylic fibers can melt when heated. You don’t want your mink to look matted or knotted.

In case your mink blankets are very dirty, you can take them to a professional dry cleaner. These people know how to handle such delicate fabric. Again, it is essential to note that harsh chemicals and harsh detergents are not an option for cleaning your blanket. If you don’t have the availability of a washing machine that can accommodate a full-size blanket, you can wash your mink blanket by hand in a bathtub. Just make sure you clean the tub first and use cold water.
