Your goals must be within your reach

FIRST STEP —

Set short-term incremental goals. Work on bigger plans later. Never go under the gun from the first moment. If you do… discouragement will be right at your doorstep. You will resign! Do you remember your New Years resolutions?

Set incremental deadlines. Short-term goals are very important. Start the first month and increase a little each month thereafter. Don’t give up too early in the game… give yourself a chance to succeed.

Set a goal too big and you know… nothing happens! Most of us throw in the towel instead of slowly working our way to the next plateau. Remember all those BIG goals in the past… how long did they last?

SMALL BITES

Achieve success in small bites. Step by step your confidence is built. If you fall… get back up. Miss the target and make the correction. Go again with renewed enthusiasm and determination.

Some of us do ‘workout’….at least we mean well….before we roll out of bed and hit the ground with our feet. Strong men like the bench press. Big “guys” participate in strongman contests. Physical fitness is (should be) an important goal for everyone. Keep our body in good working order or it will soon start to “break down”.

Our motivation can also disappear in small bites. Don’t get discouraged in what you are trying to accomplish. Set a daily time to be in the gym. Walk a mile in your neighborhood. Lift those weights “downstairs” or in the “rec” room. Be sure to “journal” your accomplishments each day.

REASONABLE

Are you reasonable? Most of us are NOT! We are not reasonable in setting goal limits. More is always better. Yes, it’s okay to stretch. Run a block. Two blocks. Three blocks and something more. Did you put in a MILE the first day? Do not do it! The same goes for lifting weights in the gym.

Yes, it looks better for us on our day timer. But not the first day you decide it’s time to get in shape. A lot depends on how long it’s been since you ran a mile. For most of us, the answer is NEVER.

How old are you? 32, 44, 56, 68 (whatever your age) makes no difference. The “sofa” has kept you in your comfort zone for the last 5,10,20 years. Now, for whatever reason, you’re in for a new “kick” of exercise. You’re going to prove to the “world” that you still have it!

You are an ideal candidate for having a heart attack in the middle of the street. Be fair to yourself and good to your family. Decelerate. There’s no rush after all those years where your body didn’t show its age UNTIL recently.

ON INSTRUCTIONS IN SLOW MOTION

One day at a time our bodies “sink” or “fall” a little more than the day before. I can’t even see it happening. A slow process but very safe in a non-threatening way. Only after many years did we begin to notice “a little” change.

The eyelids fall. Bags form under the eyes. A little “sagging” falls under the arm. It seems that we can no longer see our feet. The love handles have suddenly surrounded us. The hair color starts to match our previous dye color. Roots are visible or loose.

Nose hairs are out of control along with ear hair. Your barber now seems to find a lot more places that need trimming than before. Things that never HURT in the past have suddenly taken on a life of their own. New aches and pains arrive daily.

ACHIEVABLE GOALS

Forget joining the NFL. The Olympics are out of the question. Don’t count on buying a 20-speed bike and climbing Mount Mitchell or riding the Blue Ridge Parkway in the North Carolina mountains. Keep driving the church bus if you want to see the leaves “turn” and take the seniors with you.

Dreams are great. Go to an NFL football game and you can see yourself on the field with the other BIG players. Take out the quarterback! Run for a long pass and get the ball into the end zone for a touchdown.

Face it! Its 200 lbs. body (men) is out of shape. Maybe just a little! Regardless, we all need to stay in shape or “payday” is coming. Either we pay the price of fitness while it is still possible or we pay the consequences later. Our choice. No one is pointing a gun at our heads demanding action.

DECISIONS – decisions – DECISIONS

Large. Little ones. Every day we are making decisions. Some are very important and can even be life-threatening. Others make little difference in the long run. Do you live according to the rule: “don’t worry about the small things and believe that EVERYTHING is small things”? I like that! It’s not a bad philosophy either.

Why is life such a challenge? You wouldn’t like it any other way. The sports (football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer) are all competitive. Players are challenged to win and thrive in the competition. Business is also a challenge. Trying to beat the odds and increasing profits every quarter.

In many parts of the world there are NO challenges. I don’t work. No opportunities to earn a decent living. Bad conditions are rampant everywhere.

In the United States and other parts of the world there is prosperity and growth in the market. Challenge brings out the best in us. Our competitive nature rises to higher levels. Our goal is to win. A win/win goal is even better.

BUSINESS CHALLENGES

Homeowners are always facing new challenges in the market. New competitors arrive every day. Some have a lot of money and power. The profit margins are reduced to the limit. The price of our product or service has reached its peak.

Expenses are out of control. Our cost to staff is too much. Where can we make improvements? Reduce costs? Reduce staff? Always on our mind and our worry meter is constantly ticking.

Goals must be in place to move our business to the next level. Employees must be challenged or they will not grow and meet expectations. Benefit plans. Insurance coverage. Paid expenses. Trip. Meetings. Industry standards. And the list can go on to infinity and beyond.

ACTION TIP: Set reasonable and achievable goals for your personal life, your business and your employees. Don’t expect to go to the moon in a Piper Cub.

Start at your level to set goals for NOW. What you do today will have an impact on your tomorrow.
