Alton is located on the banks of the River Wey. The name Alton is actually derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “aewielton”, which means farm at the source of the river.

Alton has a good name as it is clearly on the river. Also in the year twelve eighty-eight it was registered as an important commercial city, and continues to be so today.

By order of William the First, also known as “William the Conqueror”, a book was created to find out what people had and how much it was worth. This was called the “Doomseday book”. In this log book, Alton was recorded as having the most valuable market.

In the year sixteen sixty-five Alton dealt with the effects of the bubonic plague. Fortunately, their recovery was quick and they did not endure as much ongoing suffering as many other cities.

Alton was known in the 18th century for making paper. They were also famous for making cloth and other supplies for making dresses.

Alton is home to the Coors Brewing Company, which ranks among the top ten breweries in the world. There was a time when the number one industry in Alton was brewing, as barley and hops were grown nearby.

For the last eight years of her life, novelist Jane Austin called Alton home. Some of her most famous works were completed while she lived here. Both their home and beautiful grounds have been lovingly preserved and are open to visitors. Even his desk has been preserved and is available to view. Such a lovely place to visit.

You can also visit the “Chawton House Library and Study Center” while in Alton. This is the working farm that was home to Austin’s brother. Here you can study his extensive literary collection.
