Boxer Dog Information

The Boxer is a German breed of dog and belongs to the category of working dogs. They are large dogs and have been used in many roles from guard dogs to therapy dogs. Although there is only one recognized breed of Boxers in the world, there are subtle variations in dogs from different countries; for example, German breeds are considered the largest on average, while American dogs are bred slightly on the smaller size. There is no other difference and they are all considered part of the same breed.

Boxers are very woody and fun-loving animals and will be happy to play all day with you. They are very gentle dogs and very safe even with very small children, although it is recommended that there be someone present because they are large dogs and do not know their own size. Although they are tolerant and gentle with young children, they are not as careful as sheepdogs and may knock them over when they become too boisterous in their play. Apart from this, they are very good playmates, especially for slightly older children, because they have energy levels that can match or even exceed your child’s.

With all their sweetness at home, they are formidable dogs. They are fiercely protective of their family and have been known to attack without provocation after misreading strangers’ body language to mean a threat. They are fiercely loyal and will give their life for you, but in return they require an owner who understands them. These dogs are highly intelligent and have been known to detect things like opening doors just by looking at their owners and are therefore not too kind to rough treatment. Rough use will only make them irritable and aggressive, although this is never directed at their owner.

Boxers also require a lot of exercise and are therefore not suitable for apartment living. Even if you can set aside an hour or two a day to walk them, they will require a lot of time to run, which is best on a medium-sized lawn or park. Despite their size, Boxers are not aggressive, and although they may appear hostile to strangers, they will never show aggression except when directly threatened. This, of course, is a highly unlikely eventuality considering these dogs can weigh up to 50kg (110lbs).
