Outdoor activities at Watch Hill consist of rowing, swimming, ocean sailing, fishing, and hiking. In addition, the local stores are full of all kinds of merchandise. Antiques, art and excellent restaurants come together to make this a special tourist area. If vacationers want to venture outside of Watch Hill, there are many local attractions that vacationers can enjoy. Watch Hill’s location between New York City and Boston makes it a supreme destination for day trips. However, vacationers may prefer to extend their visits and stay at one of the local inns.

The Niantic Indians occupied Watch Hill in the 1600s and were led for several years by Chief Ninigret. Immigrants later moved in and Watch Hill became a strategic observation point during the French and Revolutionary Wars.

Watch Hill’s remarkable lighthouse was built in 1806. In the early 20th century, Watch Hill grew into a tourist center and was home to a large number of hotels and beach shacks. In 1938, a major cyclone caused devastating destruction to the towns and ruined virtually all the hotels and cabins on Watch Hill. Despite various changes over time, Watch Hill remains an isolated and seasonal resort community.

Watch Hill is protected, quiet, safe, and easily accessible by car, boat, and air. It is a visual paradise, a town full of history, shops and magnificent Victorian architecture to delight tourists.
