The best fantasy books of all time

One thing we all have in common, we all love good fantasy books. The goal of this article is to help you decide which fantasy book you should read next.

10. “The Way of Kings” by Brandon Sanderson

Check: The story and plot of The Way of Kings are amazing. From start to finish, it holds the reader’s interest. As always, Brandon Sanderson does a great job with the characters and story development. He is so prolific, so inventive, exactly what I want to read. This book starts well but ends very well and this is a book I didn’t want to end!

similar books: Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, The Black Prism (Lightbringer) by Brent Weeks.

9. “The Black Company” by Glen Cook

Check: I started reading this book on the recommendation of a friend. I’m surprised I haven’t read this book before now. This book was really interesting – The Black Company is quite a different read than most other fantasy adventures. It is written in a first person perspective and jumps right into the story. Welcome to a completely different kind of medieval fantasy.

similar books: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, Warbreaker (Tor Fantasy) by Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time by James Oliver Rigney.

8. “The Magic Ship” by Robin Hobb

Check: Another “epic” fantasy book by Robin Hobb and yes, another 5 star review. A well-paced lively read, the characters are extremely detailed and the plot is riveting, and it’s just excellent storytelling.

similar books: Robin Hobb’s Fool’s Fate, Brandon Sanderson’s Warbreaker, Brandon Sanderson’s Elantris.

7. “George’s Clash of Kings” R.R. Martin

Check: Not an easy read! is a must read for those who love to read about knights, battles, old-time politics, dragons, and magic. Good for adult readers. George RR Martin, the tales are fantasy, set in a mythical world, but the dragons and magic etc are much less important than the power clash of different houses and kingdoms, the personal and family conflicts, and the characters themselves .

Similar books: A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin, A First Look at Communication Theory by Em Griffin, A Crown of Swords by Robert Jordan.

6. “The Broken Kingdoms” by NK Jemisin

Check: The Broken Kingdoms, the second novel in The Inheritance Trilogy, was much better than the first. This is one of the best fantasy/sci-fi books I’ve read in a long time. The Broken Kingdoms is more about forgiveness. Also forbidden love, and in a certain sense miscegenation. Lots of magic, lots of different places, the characters from the first book stay true to their nature. Brilliant and original work!

Similar books: The Red Wolf Conspiracy by Robert V., The Black Prism by Brent Weeks, Who’s Afraid of Death by Nnedi Okorafor.

5. “Game of Thrones” by George R.R. Martin

Check: This book is absolutely amazing, very few fantasy books have the depth of George Martin’s. His characters are multidimensional and the stages are uniquely designed. George Martin is so abusive to his main characters that we have to love him. If you love fantasy books, you won’t be disappointed.

Similar books: A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo.

4. JRR Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”

Check: The Hobbit book took me on a wonderful flight of fantasy, one that took me through a wide range of emotions. Bilbo Baggins is a normal hobbit, adventure may be in his blood, but it’s not really his thing. He would rather stay in his pretty house down the hill and have tea. But he has many adventures that will forever change his life and the lives of those around him. The story is magnificent. There are battles, charming settings, and one of the best endings in English literature. If you have read the lord of the rings, I highly recommend this book. If you haven’t read it yet, I envy you the experience you’ll have when you do.

Similar books: The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin, The Children of Hrin by JRR Tolkien.

3. “Harry Potter” by JK Rowling

Check: JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series was a brilliant and fantastic piece of literature to help younger readers develop their vocabulary and learn important life lessons. For anyone who hasn’t read the series and seen the movies, the books are a must read. For those of you who are against Harry Potter, I’d like to point out some of the saving qualities of these books. First, Potter has good healthy relationships with adults. Second, Potter has relatives and a professor who doesn’t like him. He shows that not everyone will like you, but that’s not a requirement for a good life. Books encourage imagination and creativity. There are other reasons, but I think JK Rowling has reintroduced reading for pleasure to our young adults and that is truly a feat. JK Rowlings has a fantastic imagination. Harry Potter has been translated into more than 67 languages, and the last four books were the best sellers in history. I recommend everyone to read these books because they have something for everyone: fantasy and magic, action and adventure, monsters, romance and laughter, anyone at any age will enjoy this set.

2. “Gardens of the Moon” by Steven Erikson

Check: An excellent start to the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. “The Malazan Book of the Fallen” by Steven Erikson deals with the world of dragons, elves and magic. This is a must read series for anyone looking for an epic story, it’s real magic. What beautiful writing, great story with many surprising twists. It is something wonderful. Stay with it. Worth it.
