What is the real 5S?

The 5S originated from Japan. You probably already know what Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke are. What is 5S really about? Is it just about cleanliness and safety? What if the workplace is already neat, clean and always organized? What happens if the tasks run out? Why did your 5S fail?

Externally, it gets literal meanings and enhancements as follows:

1. Spell (Seiri): Increased productivity

2. Simplify/Arrange (Seiton): Improved quality

3. Wipe/Shine (Seisou): Enhanced Security

4. Standardize (Seiketsu): Reduced cost

5. Sustaining/Self Discipline (Shitsuke): All of the above

But is that all? No, that’s not all. This is where the realization of management systems and the personal development of employees must be coordinated externally and internally, otherwise it will eventually fail.

Internally, 5S is also a discipline that transforms and redirects people’s behavior and habits in a positive way in the workplace to improve attitude and efficiency at work. Of course, you will also face and hear some obstacles or excuses such as the following:

• Why bother? No one is following him anyway.

• We are very busy. We just don’t have time.

• Why change the way I do it? It worked before, and it still works for me.

• That’s not what I’m hired to do, etc.

5S Discipline = External System Management x Internal Personal Development

There will be times when you have implemented things the way everyone wanted and you still won’t get answers even if you take their hands and do it together. Some people just reject you for whatever reason or just for no reason. If there is no continuous support from management, continuous positive feedback including statistics and reports, and all working as one. The 5S will fail. It is a team effort and can be expressed as the multiplication equation. Imagine one of the factors you are multiplying by is zero (missing, no support, no one following), the answer would be zero, which means you won’t succeed.

5S Success= Teamwork Effort x Communication= 5S Program x Management x Employee=1 (1 as 100%)

Management should do the 5S themselves as a role model instead of circulating emails for people to do it or someone just implement it to get initial credit for a fresh start in a management role. There are also 6S and 7S but if the 5S can be done right it will be an amazing achievement and can essentially cover all areas if the 5S is applied to everything you do inside and outside of an organization regardless of the industries you are in. is found or the workplace is already there. Tasks will not run out as it is continuous improvement and we need to update things like equipment or documents over time. If you run out of 5S tasks, that indicates that your business is probably behind your competitors because you’re not improving and growing with customers.

Start small! High love!

There’s still some more advanced stuff, but we’ll stop here as it could take years for people to realize and appreciate the above. In general, I think that the above is also a rediscovery of traditional values and disciplines that we have left behind and adapted to the world in which we live. We need to be open to learning from Eastern and Western cultures to understand how things work because there are still gaps that are often ignored.
