History: The Japanese island of Honshu, in Akita Prefecture, was the birthplace of the Akita Inu. This dog was bred to be a robust hunting and guard dog. As prey animals included black bears, wild boars, and moose, the Akita was, by necessity, a strong and determined hunter. This dog’s job was to hold prey until human hunters were ready to kill. During the 19th century, the original Akita was crossed with the Tosa, the Japanese fighting dog. This resulted in a dog that was larger and more aggressive than his Akita parent. The breed was diminished by an outbreak of rabies in the early 20th century, and World War II caused many of these dogs to be slaughtered for their fur, which was needed for uniforms.
Temperament: The Akita Inu is very loyal and attached to his human family. A Japanese Akita was so loyal that he went to the train station to meet his teacher for nine years after the teacher died. However, the Akita has a very strong and dominant personality, so a firm handler is needed to train the dog on how to behave properly. This dog should be socialized with other dogs and household pets when he is young. Although the Akita loves children, his size makes him more suitable for older children than very young children.
Health Issues: The Akita Inu is very prone to bloating and torsion of the stomach. If this occurs, the dog should be taken to the vet for immediate treatment. This is a life-threatening situation that cannot be treated at home. This dog has a small heart for its body size and is sensitive to anesthesia because of this. Grooming: The Akita’s coat needs some grooming to keep it in tip-top condition. It should be brushed with a stiff bristle brush at least once a week. When the coat is blown twice a year, it would be advisable to groom it more often than that.
Living Conditions: The Akita Inu is very protective of his family and wants to be around them as much as possible. However, this is a stocky dog with a thick coat that doesn’t mind being outside in bad weather. The Akita can live in an apartment if the owner makes the effort to give the dog adequate exercise. A house with a patio is probably a better option so that the dog is sure to get enough exercise.
