Causes and prevention of scaly skin

Do you suffer from flaky skin? Do you want to know the causes? Are you waiting for some measures that can help you prevent flaky skin? If your answer is yes, this article is for you! Read on to discover the various causes and preventative measures for flaky skin.

When there is little natural production of body oil, sebum, and a lack of water in the body, the skin becomes dehydrated and appears dry and dull. When dehydrated skin comes into contact with severe weather, such as extremes of heat, wind, or cold, it has a propensity to peel and develop scales. Flaky skin is likely to develop wrinkles easily and thus age prematurely. When skin is stripped of its natural oil and moisture, it becomes prone to cracking, swelling, rashes, itching, and inflammation.

Many people are under the impression that it is only a lack of natural oil that causes flaky skin. However, the lack of water is equally responsible. Our skin is made up of several layers of cells and has thousands of oil glands. During winters, when the humidity level is low, the skin cannot hydrate itself. In addition, the natural oil and moisture from the skin are removed when we bathe in hot water. In such climatic conditions, the sebum in the lower levels of the skin decreases and in the upper levels the moisture decreases. This leads to flaking. Therefore, flaky skin is a very common problem during winters. The skin becomes dry, dehydrated and flaky due to prolonged direct exposure to the sun. So all these conditions together cause the skin to flake.

Although it is not a permanent problem, it must be treated with extreme caution. However, there are some simple preventive measures you can take to keep your skin healthy and radiant. The first and foremost thing you can do to avoid flaky skin is to keep it well lubricated. The use of a good moisturizing lotion is recommended. Petroleum jelly will work well for lips and heels. It will replenish your skin by retaining moisture. Do not apply too much soap to the skin. The use of milk cream based soaps is recommended, as they also nourish the skin. Avoid bathing in very hot water as it will dry out your skin. Use only lukewarm water. Also, do not rub the towel against your skin, always pat it dry.

Do not go out in direct sun without applying a good sunscreen lotion. To avoid chapping your lips, use a good lip balm. You also have to pay close attention to diet. Avoid eating junk food and soft drinks. A diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables is very essential to maintain well-hydrated and luminous skin. You have to drink plenty of water every day to keep your skin hydrated and keep in moisture. This simple measure on your part can help you prevent flaky skin.
