Clearing up the PS3 games rumor

The PlayStation3 console won’t be released until later this year, but there are already rumors about it and PS3 games. The report about Theseis is a rumor that perhaps confused even the most devoted player. Developers and publishers, as well as gaming sites, have been posting their reviews, release dates, and other news about the latest PS3 games over the past few months. The PS3 Blu-ray hype raised expectations about the games; a rumor of the game, while confusing, was not unexpected.

Let me refresh the events that fueled the rumor mill. Track7 Games, the developer of the popular adventure game Theseis for PC and Xbox 360, reportedly called the folks behind PS3 Land to announce some big news. Ad? Consequently, the development of PS3 Theseis was canceled due to the high costs of developing PS3 games. The PS3 Land article even quoted Vicky Valvanos, Track7’s managing director, as saying that development on Theseis would resume if Sony offered the company help.

This news has spread among internet gaming sites and blogs with webmasters and forum moderators picking up the threads. There were also discussions about producing Theseis as one of the PS3 games. Apparently no gamers noticed that there was no announcement or news during the recent E3 or in the product listings about a Theseis software for PS3. A likely reason for this was the fact that Theseis appeared on various retail sites as a PS3 game. Track7, however, did not acknowledge the existence of these catalogues.

This is the point where everything got confusing. Track7 did not acknowledge the Theseis games on the retail sites, but called PS3 Land to announce that the PS3 Theseis was discontinued. Track7 tried to clear up the issue by saying that the parts about the PS3 Theseis canning and Theseis development were just jokes. The company even called the PS3 Land article “misguided.” As of now, PS3 Land updated their PS3 Theseis article with the new Track7 article. But the confusion over PS3 games came from Track7. According to them, there was no Thesis planned or developed for PS3, but what about the announcement they made on PS3 Land? Was there really a mistake, or was it just a joke that was told in passing and blown up to huge proportions?

A misunderstanding between PS3 Land and Track7 is a probable cause, although what they talked about remains to be seen. Surely, there was some reference to Theseus, otherwise he would not have appeared in the article. There were also a number of retailer databases showing Theseis as one of the PS3 games. Clearly someone started it and knowledge of Theseis rests solely with Track7 as Sony did not include the game in their repertoire during the recent E3. I think the most likely cause is that Track7 wanted to develop Theseis software for PS3. They dropped that “joke” to test the market and demand for their game. In my opinion, they did this, also to goad Sony into thinking that a Theseis is a good addition to their games. Anyway, whatever the reason behind this, the market for PS3 games is huge, and I can’t blame anyone for wanting to exploit this lucrative business.
