Countertop Options for Your Home Improvement

Countertops are a very important part of any home. They fulfill both a practical and aesthetic function. But with so many different options, which countertop material is right for you?

This article provides details on some of the main countertop options available, including:

laminate

roof tile

granite slabs

We hope you find this information helpful in deciding what type of countertop material is right for your home.

Plastic sheet:

Plastic laminate countertops have long been associated with the term “Formica.” Formica, however, is just one brand of plastic laminate. Three others are Wilsonart, Nevamar and Pionite. You can browse through the vast number of patterns available on each company’s respective website.

Laminate countertops continue to be a popular choice offering long-lasting function and durability, and with the wide range of designs available today, you’re only limited by your imagination. With versatility, durability and attractive prices, laminate is often the countertop of choice.

On the other hand, it is necessary to remember that plastic laminate is largely composed of, simply put, plastic. Therefore, possible scratches and burns are a problem. Therefore, no cutting or placing heat sources directly on the countertops. Laminate is also very difficult, if not impossible, to repair, so any damage will likely require countertop replacement.

There are two main options for the consumer who wants laminate countertops:

The first is postform laminate –

These are pre-made tops that are often seen for sale in predetermined lengths and made at home improvement stores or some local countertop stores. The front edge typically has a rolled edge and a 4″ built-in backsplash is included. The seams on these tops are usually located diagonally at the corner where two lengths of countertop meet. Over time, these seams can become quite notorious

The second type is site-installed sheet laminate.

With laminate installed on site, an installer (perhaps yourself) will bring sheets of laminate (up to 5′ x 12′) to your job and install them over a subsurface. The advantage of this system is the ability to install a much larger area without seams and less noticeable seams when they are still required. The cost of this type of counter is often less than postform as well. The backsplash will not blend in with the countertop and the front edge will not roll up. So you’ll have the opportunity to have different edge treatments, such as a wood species that matches your cabinetry.

Roof tile:

Tile is a pretty broad category. It includes products such as ceramics, porcelain, saltillo and natural stone materials such as travertine, slate and granite. Tile countertops are a great way to get the beauty and elegance of a custom countertop for much less than their slab counterparts (pun intended).

One complaint that many point out with tile countertops is grout lines. Creating an uneven surface and potential dirt trap, many turn away from tile countertops. However, with closely spaced grout lines and the use of latex-fortified grouts, sealers, and darker colors, much of the problem can be left behind.

Extremely durable and with an endless variety of design options, the tiles will give you years of dependable service.

Slab Countertops:

Stone slab countertops, like granite, are sourced from dozens of countries around the world. The wide range of colors and natural veining make it one of the most popular countertop options on the market.

Granite’s durability and longevity make it ideal for heavily used surfaces. And due to its exceptional strength, granite is also well suited for exterior applications.

Granite is a natural stone; therefore, patterns and colors vary from slab to slab, and even within a single slab. These natural variations ensure a uniqueness not found in all natural stones.

One of the traditional disadvantages of a natural granite countertop was its susceptibility to staining due to its porosity. But now, granite products are available with stain protection properties, making them even more desirable in today’s homes.

The options are many, but equipped with the right knowledge, you can make a selection you’ll be pleased with for years to come.
