How to refinish your kitchen cabinets

Need to modernize and add beauty to your kitchen cabinets? You don’t have to set aside a remodeling week to get your kitchen back. You can completely revamp your existing cabinets with the right tools and the right ideas. The amount of time you need is a weekend off and the main tool you need is proper planning.

Here are the steps to renovate basement kitchen cabinets:

Plan before you finish. Make sure you have all the tools you need before you start. Being right in the middle of a cabinet refinish is not a good time to have to go to the store. You’ll need things like duct tape, newspaper, drop cloth, hand tools like brushes and scrapers, and the right tool to create the finish you need. If you’re priming, painting, or adding varnish, make sure you have everything you need for that step, too. Check with your local hardware store if you’re hesitant to use paint or varnish.

Do a deep clean. Clean cabinets thoroughly before doing any restoration. You’ll be surprised how much better they look after a good wash! You can even remove the cabinet doors for a deep clean. Be sure to label the cabinet parts if you remove them so you don’t get confused.

Strip old finish and prime. This is optional, and is an option you can take if you have varnish that is really starting to chip or look dull. Sand and use strong chemicals if removing old varnish; and be prepared to spend some time on this project if you are going to take this step.

Fill the teeth and chips with wood putty. Preserve the life of your kitchen cabinets by applying wood putty to areas that may have chipped or chipped over the years. You can lightly sand it once it’s dry to complete the job.
