Identify the causes of a headache

To be honest, every time I get relief from a headache it’s the only thing on my mind. I suspect that we are all the same in this department, but that could be detrimental to our long-term health. Headaches can be caused by many things and some of them can be life altering. There are also some headaches that require more than an aspirin tablet to get rid of.

1) allergies: Nasal allergies can cause headaches and sore throats. This is due to an increased number of secretions being sent out in the hope that the invading allergen can be combated. There are three things you need to do to get rid of this type of headache. First, find out what you are allergic to so you can avoid it. If it is not possible to avoid it, you will need some type of antihistamine. There are several good over-the-counter remedies, or you can try using lemon balm tea. Third, you may want to take an anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling.

two) eyestrain: In this age of computers, iPads, and texting, our eyes are abused. Many of us stare at a computer screen at work all day, then come home and watch a television. This can cause severe pain. More importantly, it can also damage our eyes. If your head hurts at the end of the day, it’s time to go to the ophthalmologist. Special glasses can help prevent pain and protect your eyes.

While you wait for your new specs, limit the time you spend sitting in front of a screen of any kind. If pain develops, you can place a cold cloth or cucumber slices on the eyes to help them feel better. It would also be wise to avoid wearing them for a while. It’s a bit boring, but your vision is worth it.

3) Flu: One of the main symptoms of the flu is a deadly headache. Add the high fever, muscle aches and other joys of illness and you find yourself in misery. It’s a good idea to see your doctor as soon as symptoms occur. There are medications that can shorten the duration and intensity of the virus. You may also want to take medicine for pain and fever, plus something to help with a cough. Eucalyptus can be beneficial for both headache and cough.

4) Meningitis: This disease can attack anyone, but it is most often contracted by infants, young children, and young adults. This requires immediate emergency treatment at the hospital. Kill, and kill fast. Look for bruises or black marks on the throat, severe headache and back pain, and a high fever. The best thing you can do is get vaccinated against it.

5) migraines: This can cause a lot of suffering, especially when the triggers cannot be avoided or one develops just before an important occasion. Medications are available for this problem, but you may want to find out all of your triggers. Most migraine sufferers have a sensitivity to tyramine, an amino acid found in many foods, including aged cheeses. Ask your doctor to help you in this department.

6) paranasal sinuses: Sinus infections cause pain above and below the eyes. You can usually see their true shape most of the time as they are swollen. I feel like I look like a Star Trek Klingon when one attacks.

You may need antibiotics to get over a sinus infection, but doctors are less likely to prescribe them right away. Instead, they will suggest that you take anti-inflammatory medications and drink plenty of fluids. I would add garlic to that list as it acts as a natural antibiotic.

7) strokes: Like meningitis, this requires immediate medical intervention. Call 911. Symptoms, in addition to severe pain, may include numbness or paralysis on one side of the body, slurred speech, and a droopy appearance on one side of the face.

8) Strain: Allergies and stress are two very common causes. While pain relievers will help with the pain, I find a hot bath or shower almost as important. If someone is available to give a neck massage, that is also helpful in this area.

As you can see, headaches can be caused by a number of things, and taking an aspirin isn’t always the best answer. If you don’t know the cause of your pain or if your symptoms include the more serious symptoms listed above, don’t hesitate to see your doctor. Once you have a diagnosis, you can find a solution.
