Not sure about that bald cypress bonsai – is it Jekyll or Hyde?

I vividly remember my first visit to the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia. The creepy cypress forests were very mysterious, but they seemed so peaceful and calm. This is why the bald cypress bonsai with its Jekyll and Hyde persona remains one of my favorites.

If you are new to the art of bonsai, then the bald cypress is for you. This tree is very popular with beginners because it is so easy to grow. However, with its knobby knees and light foliage; it can become a true work of art with little effort. In nature, these trees can live 1,000 years.

Although bald cypress bonsai is best grown in the swampy south, where cypress grows naturally, it is possible to grow one in almost any type of climate, even indoors. However, these types of trees do need a lot of sunlight, so make sure any indoor location provides plenty of natural sunlight.

How should I care for my bald cypress?

  • Bald cypress typically grows in swamps, so it needs plenty of sun and plenty of water.
  • Don’t cut them off too soon, as they are used to growing out of water. A good rule of thumb is to allow the height to be 6 times the width.
  • They are best transplanted in winter and fall when dormant.
  • Fertilize weekly in spring, but stop fertilizing during the winter.
  • However, these types of trees do need a lot of sunlight, so make sure any indoor location provides plenty of natural sunlight.
  • Promoting the knees that this tree is known for is keeping it in a boggy environment.

Bald cypress trees are so easy to grow that you will often see them growing in ‘bonsai’ forests, which contain many trees in one pot. If you are looking for a tree that is easy to introduce to the art of bonsai, or you are a master and want to ‘train’ a true work of art, this tree is for you.
