People Are Seeds: Understanding Perfection

Hold a seed in your hand.

In your essence there is possibility.

Is it a rose, a sunflower, a daffodil, a friend, a sister, the love of your life, or your child?

Be kind to the seed… poke around. It will roll between the creases of your palm. You think you have a long way to ‘perfection’.

Smother him on the ground. Pour some water. Look at the land and demand that it ‘be different’. Be stern. Will the seed to transform… open and stretch out like a tendril? All your wishes for it to bloom now, to be on time, to have more expression, to bring you chocolates will not change it.

As the cocoon forms. Pray for it to open. Meditate on it daily. Ask God to make it develop, be less argumentative, more proactive, dress better, change the toilet paper, extend love. The jerk doesn’t have to be vulnerable with you. He doesn’t understand the change he hasn’t seen.

And then it blooms… Not because of his intention but because of his own vision. Everything must be perfect, right? But it could be a little different… Look closely at the color, are the pedals aligned? Didn’t you like the tone of his voice just now? It requires you to make promises. Bet your happiness on it. Ask that it be only yours and establish some rules. Angrily, he calls for an oak tree instead…or an elephant, for that matter!

At each stage—seed, tendril, bud, and flower—there is an opportunity for you. An opportunity to dance with metamorphosis. An opportunity to love.

Our desires for something to ‘be’ different are not out of love but judgment. Every stage is perfect. A perfect seed, a perfect tendril, a perfect bud, and a perfect bloom. Only our desire for it to be something that it was not, at that moment, has it ever imperfect. We are the imperfection. Not the person.

If you love somebody. love them. Throw away your story of who or what they should be. Celebrate the person you ARE. Love ‘what is’.

If you see greater possibilities for them, know that these are also stories.

Accept them in the decisions they make… those that uplift their own spirit. If you can’t find them, look for more!

But to transform you… Work on you. And if they ask you “how are you?”… point to the sun.
