The first lighter was created in 1816 by Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner, a German chemist. The History of the Lighter
It wasn’t until 1932 that a real advancement was made in the lighter industry. George G. Blaisdell, from Bradford Country Club in Pennsylvania, watched a friend struggle with an Austrian-made lighter that required the use of both hands and was flimsy and inefficient. He decided to create a lightweight, rugged lighter with a hinged top that skilful users could open and light in one motion. He named the new lighter Zippo in reference to another modern invention, the zipper.
In the 1950s, naphtha was replaced with butane in most lighters. This led to a more controllable and less smelly flame. It also allowed for the development of the Piezoelectric spark. This was a significant improvement over the previous technology that used ferrocerium. Instead of a metal spark, the new mechanism used quartz crystals to generate voltage. The deformation of the crystals caused electric discharge, which ignited the fuel.
Lighters were an integral part of the American armed forces during World War I, as well as in the Vietnam War. Soldiers would often get their lighters engraved with personal mottoes, slogans and icons that reflected their beliefs and values. Some of these are now very valuable collectors’ items.
