Tips for Assessing Your Dog’s Temperament

No matter how healthy or cute a puppy looks, temperament matters. However, learning to correctly assess temperament is not as easy as it seems; in fact, it’s downright complicated. Measuring a puppy’s temperament depends largely on what is learned during the dog’s younger days and how he is raised. However, some aspects of temperament are inherited.

There are some books that give you certain temperament tests to help you evaluate your dog; however, I am not a big advocate of these types of books for all dogs. Some dogs are naturally more trusting than others and these types of books can be too harsh for them. So, I think it’s best to find a reputable breeder for your specific dog and ask them to help you determine the dog’s temperament. Try to pay close attention to how the dog reacts when you first meet him. Here are some questions that may help:

Does the dog react well when other dogs are present?

You can tell a lot about a dog’s temperament just by watching how he reacts to his friends. Does he proceed to jump on other dogs or does he just sit and watch? The breeder will know which puppies in the litter are the most aggressive and which are the softest and most relaxed.

Do you relate well to the dog?

As you review potential dogs to bring home, ask yourself these simple questions:

– Are you more fascinated by a relaxed dog or a more aggressive one?

– Are you interested in a dog that loves to be in your arms all day or do you prefer a dog that needs his space?

– How is the puppy with whom you imagine spending the next 12 to 18 years?

– Do you notice any particular puppy that you seem to like?

Have you ever met parents and know how they behave?

Try to meet at least one of the puppy’s parents. However, in many cases when it comes to breeders, the father will usually not be available for you to observe. However, the mother must be there with the breeder.

Does the puppy interact with you and do you like the way he interacts with you?

You can tell a lot about a puppy’s temperament just by playing with him. All puppies should be naturally curious, energetic and interested in you and should not be afraid to approach you. Usually, if a puppy tries to approach you and is scared, there may be some issues with that particular dog.
