Locally called Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple, Meenakshi Temple is situated within the Madurai city limits. It is dedicated to Parvati (often called Meenakshi), consort of Lord Shiva. The temple has about 14 glorious towers (gopurams) and 2 special golden gopurams for the main deities. Paintings, sculptures, towers and architecture beautifully represent the golden age of the Dravidians.

Built in the 16th century by the Pandya king Kulasekara Pandya, the temple represents Madurai on the international tourism map. It also has a fascinating wall sculpture of lord Hanuman Swami. If you visit the place in the month of April, you can witness the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam festival, which represents the divine marriage of Goddess Meenkakshi with Lord Shiva.
