How to choose furniture for your cat

Starting the search for cat furniture can be daunting. There are so many options available to the public. Your choices will depend on where your kitty prefers to sleep, what type of surface she likes, what type of construction and configuration is appealing to the cat, the price of cat furniture, and where to shop.

The first thing to consider is where your cat currently likes to sleep. Do they prefer to sleep on a soft place like your bed or a hard place like a bookshelf or coffee table? Location is very important here. Kittens usually like a safe place where they can sleep without worrying about something coming down on them. Another popular place for them to lie down is on sofas, chairs, or pillows. I have seen my cat sleep in dark places like the closet or under the bed. The bottom line is that you should look at your cat’s current habits before you go outside and invest in cat bedding, cat hammocks, or cat furniture. Once you know your kitty’s clothes, the next question is what kind of material she likes.

Little lions generally like soft or smooth surfaces to lie on. I would stay away from any material with “grip” that could scratch. They could use the bed as a scratching post! Materials for bedding, sling, or keep-away hammocks are twine, sisal, and cardboard. These are great scratching materials, but not beds. Have you ever noticed how your cat loves to lie on the paper? Cats like that smooth, cool surface. Another possible material would be fleece or some other comfortable fabric.

The next item to consider is the cat furniture setup. Some people prefer cat trees or cat condos for their pets. These items are quite large and take up a decent amount of space in your home. They have several levels for the cats to jump on and lie on and are usually covered by a mat. They may also have cat scratching posts made of sisal cloth. Other smaller options are simple pillows or beds for your cat. These are upholstered and stuffed with bedding and are generally not much bigger than the cat. A different setup is a cat hammock. Cat hammocks usually have a frame with a piece of draped fabric that suspends and supports the cat. These are a great lounge for kitty.

The price of cat furniture is also an important factor to consider. Cat condos and cat trees usually start around $100 and go up from there. It’s a significant investment for your jack, so look for quality made in the USA. Made in the USA can ensure proper construction. Feline beds and cat hammocks will be priced lower than large cat condos. Prices for these items will start around $25 and go up to $60 for the deluxe versions. Designer cat beds and cat condos will be considerably more expensive than their standard counterparts. These designer items won’t be available at your regular neighborhood pet store. You’ll need to go for specialty pet stores that cater to the design-minded audience.

Finally, where to buy these accessories for your tiger? There are many large pet store chains like Petco or Petsmart that have decent selections of cat furniture. Regional brands like Pet Supply or Centinela Feed will also have a good selection. Online pet stores including Ace Cat Furniture, The Refined Feline, or Petco and Petsmart are good options.

I wish you good luck! Cats can be picky animals at times. If your kitty doesn’t like the first thing you buy her, a good thing to try is catnip. Cats love this grass and it might help them adopt the cat furniture you brought home. Take care!
