How to start a party favors business

Weddings, birthdays and parties take place every day. Your services as a party favors specialist are in demand. Making party favors or favors can be fun, enjoyable, and profitable. As a party favor specialist for over ten years, it’s not as difficult as you think to get started.

Starting
Do you like to go to parties or showers? Do color schemes excite you? If yes, then this business is for you. The main idea for creating a party favor is to keep the occasion in mind. Your client will usually choose the color scheme they want, but if they ask you to suggest something, keep the occasion, time of day, and season in mind.

The key to a great favor is neatness. No one wants to dole out favors that are messy, falling apart, or just plain dirty. As a favor specialist, your attention to detail is a must. All the favors you create must be very similar to each other. This is the beauty of a memory. They all look alike. You don’t want the guest to fight over which one they want to choose. If they all look the same, that’s an excellent achievement.

Simple Starter Supplies
The following supply list will help you get started on making favors this week! (see 4 simple profitable favors below)

A carbon copy order book
Glue gun: It doesn’t have to be high powered. I bought mine for less than $5 and it still works!
stick glue
Caramel – individually wrapped
Tulle
Small rubber bands (preferably black)
You will need a store where you can order your patterned ribbons and tulle in various colors. There are many places online if you don’t know of a provider in your area. Just google: printed lanyards, personalized lanyards, or keepsake lanyards

How to deal with customers?
Be very specific with customer orders. Ask customers to write their colors, quantity, and all specific names and dates on an order pad. Customers are easily reassured by seeing their own written instructions. Check the spelling, the date, and any other relevant information. Once the tapes are printed, they cannot be remade without incurring additional expense.

How do I make a price list?
Big question! What is the point of having a business if it is not profitable? You have to make a price list and stick to it. The most efficient way to make a price list is to know how much your expenses are. As a general rule of thumb, I add between 0.50 and $1.00 to each favor after I have calculated the cost of the favor.

Example
Favorite lollipop*
Lollipop – $.15 each (wholesale)
Tulle – $.5 each (25 in a pack for $1)
Rubber band $.01 (bulk package)
Printed ribbon $.25 each

Total cost to make a lollipop favor: $.46
I would charge at least $0.75 – $1.00 to make a profit and cover labor. Remember to value your time!
*Please note that these prices are based on wholesale quantities and my personal experience. The individual results can change.

How to organize your favourites?
At first, you may only offer a few favors. Organize the ribbons, by color, type and size. Decorate colored poster board (the kind kids use for science projects) with the various favors you offer. Put your company name at the top. Glue the actual favors or images of the favors onto the cardstock using a hot glue gun from your supplies.
