Your rabbit will need to have its nails trimmed quite frequently, and you have two options when it comes to trimming its nails: you can take it to the vet (admittedly, this will be expensive), or you can trim it yourself. (We highly recommend having a vet show you how to do it the first time to avoid mistakes.)

You can find specialized rabbit nail clippers at any pet store like PetSmart.

(Rabbit nail clippers are very similar to nail clippers sold for trimming cat nails, so you can use the same pair to trim your kitty’s nails.)

Before you trim your bunny’s nails, make sure you have nail clippers, some flour (in case you hit a vein), and a towel to wrap your bunny in, making it hard for him to squirm and try to escape. The more you trim your bunny’s nails, the more you’ll discover what works best for you and your rabbit.

There are several ways to trim rabbits’ nails. First, if someone else is with you, you can have that person securely hold your bunny wrapped in a towel (to prevent scratching) while you trim its nails. You can also sit the bunny on the ground, holding it between your legs. This makes it easier to trim the toenails on the front feet, but you’ll have to get creative to trim the toenails on the back feet.

When trimming your nails, look for the line that indicates a vein. If your bunny has dark nails, you may not be able to see it. If you can see it, don’t cut it at the vein or beyond. If you can’t see the vein, just cut a little bit. This way, you won’t accidentally hit a vein; however, you may need to trim your nails more often.
