Your online profile: how to make it stand out

If you think of internet dating as a high street store, your online profile would be like a storefront and the average guy can decide if he wants to get in and browse in a few seconds.

Naturally, your first priority is to choose a good, honest photo of yourself that is both flattering and an accurate representation of what you really look like. Preferably, it should not be a professional studio photo shoot, but rather a well-lit photo taken by a good friend. Ideally, this should be a man who can see you at your best and bring out your best on camera.

If you already have a photo that you and other people like, use it, but it must be less than a year old and reflect your current appearance, ie hair color, length, etc.

Don’t use photos that have someone else in them, be it a guy or a girl, because it will cause confusion and take a man’s attention away from what you want him to focus on: you!

Don’t be tempted to use a suggestive or partially clothed photo because you won’t be taken seriously and could attract the wrong attention. Select a head and shoulder shot, so you can be seen clearly and easily recognized.

The next thing is to think of some keywords that reflect your personality and when you have selected them, order them into short phrases that describe you perfectly. Then it’s your job to build a snappy profile out of these phrases, containing an interesting fact about yourself that might spur an illicit positive response or comment.

Don’t try to make it too smart and it shouldn’t read like an academic essay, because even the smartest ones will only be on the site looking for a date, not a thesis supervisor.

Tell the truth about yourself, but generalize and save something so you have things to talk about on your date. Your personal details should not be revealed at this stage, so keep it friendly but beautifully vague.

Use interesting descriptive words like aromatic, exotic, vibrant, and romantic when describing foods, colors, or places. That way you will stand out from the rest by bringing your phraseology to life.

Be specific about the type of man you’re looking for, so instead of saying “I’m looking for a man with a good sense of humor,” say something like “I’m interested in finding a man between 30 and 40 who has the ability to make me laugh.” , has a goatee, long hair, and rides a Harley, so if you fit that description, email me today.”

What you’re doing here is filtering out guys you’re not immediately interested in, without having to spend time finding out they’re not your type and then coming up with an excuse to let them go.

You are also telling them what to do next by creating a call to action. Reduce the amount of time they will spend scratching their heads and deciding how to proceed to the next step.

Spend some time looking at other people’s profiles and think about the ones you like and what makes them stand out and learn some tips from them.

Above all, be yourself and be positive and even funny, as long as your humor is harmless and innocent and highlights the attractive aspects of your character.
